People including me have already told you guys earlier about this, but here it is again. Request other alumni to add more suggestions in reply to this post. This is not exhaustive at all. I listed them after looking at some CVs sent to me. You should check your CV with this list at least. These are just my opinions. Other people may differ. So, always get your CV reviewed by at least 2 seniors in the same/similar industry. Do not hurry in making it, these 2 sheets of paper will shape your future. Sometimes resume may need to be adapted for particular job opening. If you are maintaining several resume, do not mix them.
1) Filename: should be firstname_lastname.doc format. Nothing like CV.doc or resume.doc will work. avoid space in filename. also, MS word is preferred format everywhere, except otherwise stated. All this allows HR people to store CVs easily. If you make it difficult for them to store your CV, you pay the price.
2) Sending CV: If any email subject is specified, follow that rule. If any web link is given, submit it at that link, do not email ! If you know some senior in that organisation, refer their name in the covering letter. And plese have a decent covering letter. Do not just attach the CV and send it. Write a few words to HR about why they should consider your CV. Possible statements are- you have interest in that field, its your dream company, you have experience in the field, senior told that it is fun to work ... etc. And PLEASE take pain to submit one CV at a time to one company. It looks bad if the HR person finds that the same mail has been sent to 2-3 other companies.
3) Keep the CV concise and to the point. Anyway, freshers do not have much to write. but if you have done any project etc, keep the explanation for the interview. only the title should go in CV. Do not make CV too long. Anything longer than 2 pages is unacceptable. One page is OK for freshers. And do not give the title of the CV as curriculum vitae, everyone knows what it is. Heading can be your name. Do not keep it unappealing but neither should you overdecorate it. Do not use colours/pictures etc. Appearance and language should be formal.
4) The heading should have your name, address, contact number and email.
5) Then comes you academic qualifications in reverse chronological order. Maintain consistency. If you are writing name of school, write name of college. if you are writing name of board, write name of university. 2nd option is better.
6) Add any area of interest, major (if M Tech), particular field in which you have done some extra achievement. It simply translates to in what field do you want to be interviewed most. be ready to be grilled on this. If you have done some projects/papers, this part will be easy. Languages and common subjects generally do not go here. You should not write C++, java, OS here, but RTOS qualifies.
7) summer training: mention if you did any summer internship. write 2-3 sentences about it. If you did not do any internship or did any course of C++, VLSI, skip this section altogether. Guys at college, NEVER add false training statement/certificate. You will be caught.
8) Then comes projects/seminars/papers section. The title of the project/paper should imply what it is about. If not, you can write 1-2 sentences about it. It is better not to mention if your projects were like library management, airline reservation system etc. So, please raise the level of your projects. If you have not done the project or not contributed to it, don't worry, you will be caught during interview. So, take projects seriously; there is no excuse for stupid projects. I feel sad when I see any CV with project, these do not even qualify as class practicals! Anyway, that's a separate matter altogether.
9) Achievements: Mention if you have done anything worth recognition and awarded. projects, papers, sports, culturals, any award can be included. If you were board or class topper in college, mention it as
first point. If you have too many achievements, mention only the important ones or technical ones. Add a sentence that you had other awards in sports/culturals in that case.
10) In the end, have a personal info section. You write here father's name, sex, date of birth, marital status and if space permits, hobbies too (with caution).
11) many people write a line or to of objective after the heading. this is optional. you can write it but for it, each word matters. if you do not have anything good to write, skip it. You can be grilled in the interview for it. This also holds true for hobbies.
12) You can include the references as the last section. This is optional. Anyway, it is required to be filled at the time of application so it is not mandatory.
13) Academic qualification (marks) should be in table format.
14) If you want to say "references will be available on request", no need to say that. Do not keep that section.
In the end, reminder: run a spell check on it and get it reviewed by seniors
before forwarding it anywhere.
